Itinerary Summary

KERALA FAMILY ADVENTURE

Welcome to India, where culture speaks, tradition echoes, beauty enthralls, and diversity delights. Kerala, in southern India, is often called God’s own country. It is the perfect destination for an authentic and fully immersive journey. Here you will experience the long shoreline, serene beaches, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters, lush hill stations, exotic wildlife, sprawling plantations, historic monuments, and exotic cuisine.

ITINERARY IN DETAIL

Day 1      Arrive Kochi

Arrive in Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel by the harbor, with a wonderful view of the sea and the busy shipping lanes. The rest of the evening is at your leisure
Day 2      Kochi

This morning, take an easy walk through Willington Island and visit the historic part of the city. Visit Fort Cochin and Mattancherry, with its picturesque tiled roofs and pastel-colored buildings. Cochin has the best natural harbor in the country and is set amidst lovely lagoons and backwaters, with swaying coconut palms in the background. Continue on to the Dutch Palace and St Francis Church – the oldest church built by Europeans in India. In the evening, enjoy the waterfront sunset as you watch fishermen hauling in their nets. After dinner, enjoy a Kathakali dance performance, a uniquely Keralan experience.
DAY 03     Kochi - Periyar

Today we leave Kochi and drive to Periyar, known as the spice coast. The region boasts India’s finest spice plantations as well as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Take part in an elephant safari today as you ride an elephant through a spice plantation. You will have an opportunity to play, bathe and feed your elephant, as well as witness their tricks and skills. Enjoy a typical tea worker’s lunch today before we take a boat ride through the Periyar backwaters. This evening at dinner, learn about the region’s wide variety of spices as you participate in a cooking class led by an expert chef.

DAY 04      Periyar

Float on a bamboo raft in the clear morning air on Lake Periyar. Enjoy a scenic trek to view game. Hope to see endangered Asian elephants in herds up to fifty-strong as they come down to the lake for a morning drink, or catch sight of monkeys, bison, deer, and spectacular birds. Orchids are in abundance, with over 140 different species found here. Later visit a nearby spice plantation, accompanied by an experienced naturalist, to learn about the traditional and organic techniques used to prepare the spices for the kitchen. After dinner experience a 'Kalaripayattu' performance, the traditional martial art of Kerala.
DAY 05     Periyar – Munnar

Begin the day with a spiritually refreshing yoga session. Drive to Munnar, the favored summer resort of the British rulers in colonial days.

DAY 06      Munnar

Take a refreshing 2-3 hour trek through tea plantations. Enjoy the scenic mountains, pristine valleys, and cool spice scented air. Return to your hotel for an afternoon of leisure.
DAY 07     Munnar – Kumarakom

The drive today takes you to Kumarakom, rated by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the 25 best getaways in the world. The remainder of the day is free, perhaps to experience a unique rejuvenation therapy.

DAY 08    Kumarakom

A deluxe houseboat will take you through the tranquil waterways of “God’s own country.” View a picturesque series of canals, lined with village homes and coconut trees, to witness the local lifestyle. A lunch of traditional Indian cuisine is prepared on your boat as you continue to enjoy the spectacular scenery. Float to your exquisite hotel, constructed from fragments of Keralan palaces and set upon an abandoned coconut plantation.

DAY 09      Kumarakom

Also rated by National Geographic as one of the world’s most beautiful places, this morning take time to explore this bit of paradise by bicycle or kayak. The remainder of the day is set aside for rejuvenation therapy. Begin with a doctor’s consultation and receive a personal program of diet and therapy, which may include a massage, steam bath, and yoga regimen.
DAY 10      Kumarakom – Marari Beach

Drive to the village of Mararikulam, tucked away on the beach behind a line of dense palms. Your resort is sprawled across 25 acres and contains 52 cottages made of rust-colored stones and covered in trumpet flowers.
DAY 11        Marari Beach

Shop in the local colorful bazaar and enjoy a relaxing lunch in the village. Spend the day at your leisure before watching a stunning sunset during a farewell dinner.
DAY 12      Departure

Return to Kochi for your departure back home.
